Amongst David Walliams ironic review of shit TV (Awfully Good, Channel 4, 4 January 2011) were several snippets of Noel Edmonds, a man whose hairstyle has remained unaltered since 1976's Multicoloured Swapshop. (Perhaps he was born with blond highlights). In amongst wildly camp disco dancing and Cannon and Ball jokes about Pakistanis at the Wheeltappers and Shunters Social Club, I was struck by a particularly poignant image of Noel, which made me think of this imaginary dictionary entry:
GRIEF (noun, from Old French 'grever')
Deep or intense sorrow or distress. At its most extreme, exemplified by the (now outlawed) practice of wives launching themselves onto husbands' funeral pyres in certain cultures.
At its most inept, Noel Edmonds witnessing a live car stunt on his prime-time Saturday night show going tits up, the 12 seconds between his concerned brow clocking the limbs jutting from the mangled wreckage, then saying "Well, let's look ahead to next week's show ..."
